POSITION: Web Developer
REPORTS TO: Director of Technology
DEPARTMENT: Digital
LOCATION: Toronto
STATUS: Part-time 3 to 6 months Freelance Contract
Summary:
St. Joseph Media is Canada's third largest magazine publisher with brands including award-winning titles such as Canadian Family, Toronto Life, Torontolife.com, FASHION, Fashionmagazine.com, WeddingBells, weddingbells.ca, Mariage Quebec, WHERE Canada magazines, and Quill & Quire, quillandquire.com.
The ideal candidate must have 3+ years of strong coding skills in a PHP, .NET environment and strong experience in database development (SQL Server, mySQL, postgreSQL) and SQL. Working knowledge of Python and Django is a great asset. The candidate will have the ability to work beyond the code to balance business objectives with user experience. The Web Developer will work directly with other members of the team to develop, organize, and maintain dynamic web pages and web applications.
Responsibilities:
● Build and maintain dynamic Web pages and Web applications using various technology pieces – PHP, Python/Django, .NET, CSS, XHTML, XML, Ajax, JavaScript/JQuery
● Build and maintain dynamic databases for product websites and applications using various technologies and database formats – MySQL, SQL Server 2008, postgreSQL, JSON, XML
● Experience in database design, profiling, migration and management is required.
● Knowledge of SQL Server Reporting and Integration Services
● Working knowledge of open-source CMS systems (e.g., WordPress, DotNetNuke) and their management
● Participate in developing application requirements, specifications, technical needs and time lines and is involved in all aspects of web development process.
● Collaborate with other team members to meet goals and deadlines
● Proactively identify application problems and troubleshoot accordingly to a resolution
Qualifications and Requirements:
● Post secondary training in Computer Science or equivalent experience
● Experience in a software development cycle and object oriented programming
● Ability to use procedural and object oriented methodologies
● Strong programming skills in at least one of following languages: PHP, .NET, Django/Python, Perl, Java
● Experience with Windows and Linux platforms
● Familiarity with Subversion
● Demonstrated experience with SQL systems such as Microsoft SQL Management Studio, MySQL, PostgreSQL
● Familiarity with Internet standards such as HTTP, HTML, XHTML, SMTP
● Strong communication and follow-up skills; experience with project management an asset
